Jatropha Plantations
The foundation supports the development of Jatropha plantations given the strong demand for bio diesel from Nations of the Developed world. The Foundation will engage to provide guidance in pre feasibility consultation. This work includes training of participants and stakeholders, and will continue from scoping studies to full implementation. This will ensure that both best practice, and a balanced approach to food security issues is adopted.
JATROPHA NURSERY & AGRO PLANTING TECHNIQUES
Jatropha reproduction is by sexual (seed/seedling) and asexual (vegetative) propagation. Training is provided and support given in selecting quality planting materials and plant feed; pre-sowing treatment, sowing in polybags and proper trans-planting to ensure high performance and high survival rate of the Jatropha trees. Other areas include Floral Biology of Jatropha Species, Bio-technology & hybridisation techniques, Invivo and Invitro techniques.
ESTABLISHMENT: CULTIVATION & MANAGEMENT TO OPTIMISE YIELD
Jatropha grows over a wide range of arid and semi-arid conditions. Hoeing and weeding are essential during the establishment period. Good management practices ensures seed yield potential and oil content are improved. Guidance on crop architecture; pruning and pinching of terminals to induce laterals and maximum branches.
INTER-CROPPING TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY
Planting density and geometry are based on plan for intercrop. Agronomists help select appropriate range of field crops, oil seed crops, medicinal and aromatic plants as inter-crops to maximise farmers’ income till the plantation attains reproductive stage. Suitable crops include soybeans, sesame, mung and cow peas, water melon, cluster beans, sunflower, castor oil seed, medicinal plants and herbs.
POST HARVEST, OIL SEED STORAGE & OIL EXTRACTION
Excessive biological activity in the seeds, either in fields or prior to harvesting or subsequently during storage, will degrade seed quality and oil content. Correct guidance is required in sampling, cleaning, drying, storage and the choice and application of oil extraction processes:- hydraulic, mechanical and solvent extraction.
